- Confirm your eligibility basics: employment status (full-time or 0.75+ FTE) and, for the NEA Foundation, current NEA membership
- Find out your school's Title I status and its roughly-what-percent free/reduced-price-meal rate — several programs gate on it
- Run The Three Hats Test: decide whether you, your school, or your PTA is the applicant for each program
- Ask your principal about the district's grant/donation approval policy and any board-acceptance dollar threshold
- Write a two-sentence description of exactly what you need funded and the outcome for students
- Note two of your strongest classroom results or stories to reuse across applications
- Run The Live-or-Dead Check on any program from a listicle: confirm it's live on the funder's own site
- Put each program's window on your calendar with a reminder two weeks before the deadline
